Fall beauty trend, nude and natural lips for every skin tone

One of Fall 2014’s hottest beauty trends was demonstrated by Marc Jacobs on the runways of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and featured a natural yet dramatic monotone face with impeccable skin, subtle contouring, muted lips, and bleached brows.

Minus the bleached brows, the all over nude makeup trend is one that can easily be adapted for everyday wear with strategically placed hints of color using tones that are naturally visible in the skin.  The key to perfecting this look requires use of neutral toned makeup products that are slightly darker than the areas of the skin where it is to be applied. (i.e., lips, cheeks and eyes.)  Another important step is to mix up textures and/or finishes of products to avoid an overall flat, mask-like look.  For example, if you choose to wear a nude lip color with a matte, opaque finish you would need to avoid using a foundation with a matte finish and opt for a formula that creates the illusion of luminous and dewy skin.

The nude/natural lip is the easiest way to adopt this look into your beauty regimen however, many women avoid wearing nude lip color because they feel like it makes them look older or “washed out”.  Although it’s true that brighter lip colors that compliment your individual skin tone and eye color will brighten the face, a properly chosen shade of nude will make the lips appear more voluminous and healthy naturally.

Begin the process of creating the nude lip by selecting a neutral/natural shade that matches the undertone in your skin and has a creamy texture and a hint of sheen. (Formulas that are too matte/opaque can look like you’ve smeared concealer all over your lips and make you look washed out)  When trying to select the “perfect” shade for this natural lip look, it may be helpful to refer to the way you select a foundation for your individual skin tone selecting a lip color that is one shade lighter than your natural lip color.

Kelly’s Pro Tip: Be sure to exfoliate and hydrate the lips as this look does not translate well on dry, dehydrated lips.  Prior to applying lip color, neutralize the natural color of the lips with foundation or concealer and set with powder to prevent bleeding.
